Stainless steel 1.4404 is a corrosion-resistant, chromium-nickel, austenitizated and not stabilized steel containing 16.5 – 18.5 % of chromium (Cr) and 10 – 12 % of nickel (Ni). Its chemical composition complies with the standard for using of products for foodstuffs and drinking water. This alloyed noble steel is highly resistant against corrosion in water environment, and it is extremely resistant against hole corrosion in a presence of chlorides and, especially, against sulfuric and phosphoric acids. This stainless steel is, however, less suitable in environments containing nitric acid. Surface corrosion resistance may be increased by polishing. Stainless steel 1.4404 is workable and possible to be welded, without a risk of inter-crystalline corrosion occurrence.
